Days of many limo companies are numbered in the UK.

Due to the enclosed letter from VOSA and its contents, the whole limousine industry has been changed in one fell swoop, and it is a catastrophe of major proportions, as our vehicles will overnight become un-roadworthy and obsolete after September 30th, 2009. Limousine companies will have no income to pay hire purchase loans to banks etc., rent and rates on their business premises, auditors, wages, VAT etc., etc. They cannot even take the route of selling vehicles in order to pay off debts, as due to the new legislation, the vehicles have become effectively worthless. After 15 years, “VOSA” is concerned about limo safety in the UK, with the new law enforced (1st Oct 2009) 90% of stretch limos and Hummers can be crushed if carrying passengers without proper documents.

Judge for yourself!

Within the 15 years of trading in the UK, there has never been a fatal accident and no one ever has died inside the limousine. What about airplanes, trains, coaches, minibuses, black cabs? Which industry has the highest safety records?

  • With the new law enforced many Limousine operators will face closure.
  • Is this the best time to make 1000's people out of work with new safety measures?
  • Aren’t these limos imported legally, paid their taxes and the businesses not registered?
  • Did you know relatively limousines have fewer accidents than black cabs, and coaches in the UK?

Although the clamp and crush of the limos will be enforced from 1st Oct still there is no clear guideline on how to adopt the new safety standards.

Can someone explain after all how much the limo safety will be improved?

We feel the implementation of the new law does not serve a major purpose toward improvement of the safety of the limousine industry and it seems to be just a ploy by the lobbyist on behalf of the transport industry to collect extra income from an industry that is already suffering from the current recession.

Limousine services are considered to be luxury service. Unlike minibus or coach transports most of the limos are driven inside the city areas, short distances with the speed of less than 40 M/H. This explains why limos have much fewer accidents. The new legislations are out of proportion, and will damage the limousine industry.

We believe the law must be dynamic and justify the real needs for its existence. Today after 15 years of operation there are enough limos to deserve more attention from the law makers, perhaps a dedicated division or governing body. Currently limos are considered as public transport and must apply to all the regulations that apply to coaches, buses, mini buses and taxis. The truth is although they may hold a common ground in respective of transportation law, the true nature of this business is so different.

Unfortunately this difference has been ignored by our law makers, and this industry is falling because of the forces of one single certificate which is not truly applicable for this matter.
